Waterlilies at Disney National Reserve |
The white water lily belongs to the Nymphaeaceae family.
They are sturdy, rooted aquatic plant which leaves float on the surface of the water. They are between 1.5 and 6.5 feet tall. The flower is shaped like a bowl with white and pink petals. The leaves are round and are a deep green in colour. The leaves have stems which are green. There is only one stem to every flower. The flowers open at dawn until midday. The flowers come out in June an August.
They are found on lakes, ponds and rivers.
After flowering the coil pulls the flower below the water and this is when the fruit grows. When the seeds are ready, they are let out and the flower is able to go back to surface of the water. The seeds float for a while and them sink, where they germinate in the mud.
