 Spotted beebalm Monarda punctata

The spotted beebalm belongs to the Lamiaceae family.

The plant has many branches with purple flowers and hairy stems. The flowers taste and smell of spearmint, because of this they are used in tea and other dried goods.

Flowering occurs from summer to autumn. This plant clumps together by using its own saliva.

The plant is found in wood and fields. The spotted beebalm prefers direct sun like rather than partial sunlight.

Butterflies and bees are attracted to the smell of the leaves and the colouration.

The Native Americans used this plant for tea production, medicinal to treat cold and flu,  it contains thymol which is used in fungicide and bactericide.
