 Cormorants  Phalacrocorax melanoleucos

The cormorants belong to the Phalacrocoracidae family.

The are water birds, so they have long legs, neck and body. They are black along the back and white from the neck downwards. The young are brown instead of black but the white front is the same. The adults an young both have yellow bills.

They breed along cliff edges and rocky areas, where there is little threat from predators.

They eat solely fish. They hunt by sitting by the water and waiting for the fish to come past, they dive down into the water stabbing the fish with its bill.

Their nesting sites are located on a pile of seaweed, leaves and sticks. The females lay around seven eggs.
