Killdeer

Killdeer Charadrius vociferus 

The Killdeer belong to the Charadriidae family.




They are brown on the back and white on the under belly. The head has lines of black, white and brown. They have small brown bill and white legs. 

They are found in urban and city areas, fields and mudflats. They run for a little bit and them stop to see if there are any food around, then repeat that over and over again. When they feel threatened they immediately take off and circle and being vocal. 

They feed on invertebrates, seeds and insects. 

 The males during mating season fly over their territory whilst singing, courtship is the male building the nest. The nests are on the ground.  The female lays around five eggs and incubation of twenty eight days this is done by the male and female.  The young are fed by female and male, the young leave and are able to fly at twenty five days.
