Armadillo

Armadillo at Merritt Island

Armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus

The Armadillo belongs to the Dasypodidae family.

They have a durable, sturdy shell, which when threatened are able to crawl into a ball. They have long claws to assist in digging holes and finding insects to eat.
They are around eighty centimetres long.

They are quiet fast for their size, they can reach thirty miles per house. Despite their speed they do not have good eyesight.

The shells are made from scutes which are bony plates. The Armour doesn't stop at the body, the limbs and heads are protected as well.

The pregnancy is around four months, and the females on average have four young. The mother provides milk for a couple of months.
